Chateau Ste. Michelle - Johannesberg Riesling (1993)
The Chateau Ste. Michelle produces wines that have enchanted me since my
first visit to that Washington State winery in 1991, and this particular
vintage is on par with their best. A somewhat sweeter wine than most whites,
it goes quite well with both chicken and fish. However, its best atmosphere
is with dessert, where its fruity flavor enhances almost any after-dinner
snack. I generally prefer something like raspberries and vanilla ice cream,
but this wine is forgiving enough for experimentation. At eight dollars a
bottle at any Pennsylvania Wine & Spirits shoppe, it is also quite
inexpensive.
Fossi - Chianti (1990)
Bottled by C.V. Fossi Duilio, Fiesole Italy
Among the wide selection of Chianti wines, Fossi is consistently extraordinary.
Even the spiciest meatballs and sauces cannot overwhelm this wine. In fact,
I find that my dinner seems rather bland without such a chianti as this. A
complement to simple pasta, Fossi brings life even to a basic spaghetti with
Ragu sauce dinner.
Torres - Sangre de Toro (1990)
Bottled by Miguel Torres , Viliafranca Del Pendes, Spain
Sangre de Toro is not only a delightful after-dinner wine, but is also a
perfect companion to everything from pepper-stir-fry steak to plain pizza.
A very consistent vintage, Sangre de Toro always surprises the palate by
delightfully tingling the taste buds. It is also an inexpensive wine, selling
for around seven dollars a bottle at any Pennsylvania Wine & Spirits shoppe.
Sangre de Toro literally means "blood of the bull", and each bottle is
accompanied by a little plastic bull.
